I went on a quest for something of high ability at a cheap expense. After some explore I came upon Wusthof Knives. The absolute best is their "Classic" set, however I didn't want to spend that much money so I decided to try the "Gourmet" set. It came with a butcher block, steak knives and a free bamboo cutting board for less then $200. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and I recommend them to anyone. I indubitably threw away my old set and my gorgeous Wusthof's proudly grace my new granite counter!

Good Knives, Are They The Right Knives For You? : Wusthof Gourmet 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

***Edit-- This impart was written in 2004 for the Wustof excellent knife set, Not The Gourmet. The excellent set is about 4-5 times the cost of the gastronome set. The gastronome is the economy/entry level set from Wustof. Amazon has since associated this impart to the gastronome set as well. Please keep that in mind.***

I recently purchased the Wustof excellent set after much research in the middle of the various Wustof and Henkel models. In general, the Wustof's had a much nicer feel and balance to them. I also prefered the blade weight and thickness of the Wustof. I personally prefer the excellent over the Grand Prix, but it is 100% personal preference as the only real inequity is the handles.

I compared the Wustof's to the Henkel's at one of the knife market in the mall. Comparing them side-by-side was very enlightening and made my mind up that I will only buy the Wustof's from now on. I very recomend going to one of the mall knife shops and playing with them, most have a wide option of all of the high potential knives. For this kind of money it is the only wise way to make your decision. I would recomend purchasing from Amazon.com though, the knife market I went to were about 25% more high-priced unless they had a "sale" on a definite item, in which case it was the same price as Amazon.com.

These are one of the best knives you can get, although they are no better than the other models and makes. All knives at this level are top quality, please base your decision on preference and try them out first.

wow, what can I say : Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set

I loved these knives right out of the box. They came sharp and feel great. I was finally arresting out of the parent's house and needed some knives. With the free block and steel from Amazon you can't go wrong. I looked at all the sets for weeks and in the end decided that I would rather just buy what I needed, instead of settling for what came in the sets. I have found that I am rarely happy with prepackaged sets of anything. Therefore, this was a good starting point to which I added a bread knife and plan to add pieces if I need them (I doubt I will, but I may just fill the block :). I bought these sight unseen from Amazon and could not be happier.

Update! June 2011 and still going strong! Daily use, occasional sharpening, wow.

I bought this for my wife and she abosolutely loves it. This knife cuts very well. We pulled out her old, recently sharpened, knife, compared them, and what a difference. This knife is awesome. It might not have the weight like one of the more high-priced knives, but, it cuts beautifully and is a great knife for any kitchen.
